1.1 APPLICABLE PUBLICATIONS: The publication listed below form a part of this specification to the extent referenced. The publications are referred to in the text by the basic designation only.
1.1.1 ASTM E 84 ..Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials
1.1.2 ASTM E 814 Fire Tests of Through-Penetrations Firestops
1.2 SUBMITTALS:
1.2.1 Certificate of Compliance: Manufacturers' certificates of compliance that the materials meet the requirements specified.
1.2.2 Manufacturers' Data: Manufacturers' data for the fire stopping including fire stopping composition, performance characteristics, and installation procedures.
1.2.3 Shop drawings: Shop drawings showing material installation details including reinforcement, anchorage, and fastenings.
1.3 DELIVERY AND STORAGE:
1.3.1 Deliver materials to the project site in the original unopened containers or packages bearing the manufacturers' names, brand designations and product descriptions. Store materials under cover and protect from damage. Do not use damaged materials.
2.1 MATERIAL: Fire stopping material shall be asbestos free, 100% intumescent, have code approval under BOCA, ICBO, SSBC, NFPA 101, NFPA 70, and be capable of maintaining an effective barrier against flame and gases in compliance with the following requirements:
2.1.1 Flame Spread: 25 or less, ASTM E 84.
2.1.2 Fire Resistance and Hose Stream Tests: Fire stopping materials shall be rated "F" and "T" in accordance with ASTM E 814 or UL 1479. Rating periods shall conform to the following:
a. (F) ______ (T) ______ Time-rated floor or wall assemblies
b. (F) ______ (T) ______ Openings between floor slabs and curtain wall.

2.1.4 Substitutions: Submit in accordance with Section 01600.
3.1 FIRESTOPPING LOCATIONS: Provide fire stopping in the following locations:
- Duct, cable, conduit, and piping penetrations through floor slabs and through time-rated partitions or fire walls.
- Openings between floor slabs and curtain walls, including hollow curtain walls at the floor slab.
- Openings between walls and ceilings of time-rated assemblies
- Penetration of vertical service shafts
- Openings and penetrations in enclosures with time-rated fire doors.
- Other locations indicated or specified.
3.2 PENETRATION:
3.2.1 Coordination: Coordinate the work with other trades. Fire stopping materials at penetrations of insulated pipes and ducts can be applied after insulation is in place. If insulation is composed of combustible material, the thickness of fire stopping materials must be equivalent to that of the insulation. If the insulation is composed of non-combustible material, it may be considered as part of the penetrating item.
3.2.2 Surface Preparation: Surfaces to be in contact with fire stopping materials shall be free of dirt, grease, oil, loose material or other substances that may affect proper fitting or the required fire resistance.
3.3 INSTALLATION
3.3.1 Install fire stopping materials in accordance with the manufacturers' instructions.
3.4 CLEANING
3.4.1 After completion of fire stopping work in any area, equipment shall be removed and walls, ceilings and all other surfaces not to receive fire stopping shall be cleaned of deposits of firestop materials.
3.5 INSPECTION
3.5.1 The architect may select and the Owner will pay an independent testing laboratory to examine firestopped areas to ensure proper installation prior to concealing or enclosing the firestopped areas.
